Heading through images there is certainly just a lot you are able to image within a 57-year-old man’s world- approaching pension, grandchildren, some scotch, documenting memoirs as well as early morning as well as night strolls with regard to physical exercise. Wherever for several living gets smaller sized, with regard to Ranjan Sood it merely requires grew to become big.
In January 2013, at the age of 57, Ranjan Sood led a group of four that reached the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 19,341 feet above sea level. Of the seven summits, he has already climbed three—Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and 18,000 feet of the Everest. And he is sure he can do two more, next on the cards being Mount Aconcagua in South America in December.
In 1973, his school organised an All India rock climbing fest in Manali at the Jawahar Lal Nehru mountaineering institute. The 21-day camp left a lasting passion for adventurous sports in him. But it was not his time yet for he had start working. For adventure, he had to satisfy himself with climbs to religious places like Vaishno Devi. It was five years ago, when GHAC or Great Hyderabad Adventure Club was formed. It could not have come at a better time for Ranjan. He was 55, had a wonderful family and was a successful businessman. He had the time and the money to finally fulfill all his childhood passions. As much as he is revered by the group now, his first step into daredevilry posed little challenge. “I was 51 then. I joined the online forum and received a reply from the then organiser which said—“We don’t carry baggages. Veterans are not allowed.” I took it as a challenge. I told myself someday l will prove him wrong.” And he did. From trekking to paragliding, he did everything the club had to offer. “We were one of the first few to go to Mount Everest from GHAC. I told them I may not be able to help much but I will try and be independent. And I proved that,” he says.
After 18,000 feet of Everest, climbing 19,400 feet of Kilimanjaro was not as difficult for him. They trekked and climbed almost incessantly accomplishing 14,000 feet in three days. One can imagine how easy it is to fall in love with the mountains. Sharing his experience with the majestic ones, he says, “When you are there, you are actually aligning your three bodies— your mind, your physical and your emotional. You are harmonising them. This is one of the most profoundly spiritual moments—You are one with nature and you are experiencing your every step. You have to live in the moment. It is so dicey sometimes. One slip of the foot, and you go down. Just a month before us, three climbers lost their lives, and a month after, six died in an avalanche.”
For the love of sports and adventure, he is working on a project with his son-in-law. On a 10-acre land in Moinabad, he is opening a sports ground which will have all the ethnic sports such as kho-kho, kabaddi, gilli-danda, seven stones, etc. which are slowly drifting into oblivion. “We have forgotten the touch of mud. When I was young, we used to swim in the lake. Now who dares to go to the lake. Ethnic games like gilli danda, seven stones, kho kho, kabbadi, dirt runs are particularly for the corporates. People have become couch potatoes but they want to find their way back to the nature,” he says. At the recently held fifth anniversary of GHAC, when Ranjan Sood was recognised for his achievements he had a few words to say: “I wish I could go back 40 years in my life. Had I been a youngster, I would have been achieving much more. People ask me why I do this at this age. But it is such a pleasure achieving it. Once you are at the summit, you don’t feel tired at all.”
